Joseph P. Egan

Joseph P. Egan was born in Connecticut May 18, 1923, to Patrick and Winifred Phillips Egan. He had two brothers William and Charles and two sisters Anna and Frances. In Rye his family lived at 1 Railroad Avenue (Theodore Fremd) and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

Joseph attended Rye High School and participated in track and was a member of the Drivers Club. He graduated RHS in the Class of 1942.

Joseph enlisted January 19,1943 and served in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers during World War II.

In World War II, U.S. Army combat engineers were at the spearhead of fighting in all theaters, whether the battlefield was North Africa’s desert sands, Normandy’s fire-swept Omaha Beach, the Ardennes’ snowclad forest, or the Pacific’s jungle-covered islands.

The 700 engineer battalions mobilized during the war repeatedly proved to be vital components to Allied victory on all fronts. Both on the attack and on the defense, engineers led the way.

Joseph was honorably discharged on September 26, 1944. After the war, he worked as a die caster for the MT. Vernon Die Casting Co..

He died on March 1, 1968 at the age of 44, and was buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
