Carl Richards Elliott

Carl Richards Elliott was born on June 27, 1921, in Augusta, Georgia, to Jessie Holman and Stephen Herbert Elliott. He attended local school in Augusta. Prior to the war he attended Duke University and graduated from The University of Georgia. We believe he was a cousin to John Chetwood Elliot, whose grandfather hailed from Georgia. In Rye he lived with his cousins at 2 Stuyvesant Ave.

Carl enlisted April 15, 1942 and served in the US Army during WWII. He served in the United States Army during World War II where he saw combat at the Battle of the Bulge receiving the Purple Heart. While in the army, he attended the University of New Hampshire and St. Andrews University in Scotland. He was honorably discharged February 20,1946.

After the war, Carl lived in New York City for many years where he attended the Traphagen School of Fashion Design. He later was co-founder of the Court Jester of Fashion Design. He returned Savannah in 1971 becoming very active in the local theatre community.

Carl was past president of the Savannah Arts Association and the designer of scenery for the first production of the Georgia Day Pageant at the Savannah Civic Center. He served on the city committee and scenery designer for the City of Savannah for the Semi Quencentennial celebration. He was in the Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church Theatre Group and the Savannah Lights Leisure Service Theatre. He served on the Board and was an active member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church.

Carl Richards “Dix” Elliott, 81, died Thursday, April 30, 2003, at Hospice Savannah, Inc. Funeral services will be held today, at 1 p.m., at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church in Savannah with Rev. William G. Hester officiating. Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel in charge of arrangements in Savannah. Interment will be at Westover Memorial Park in Augusta on Saturday, May 3 2003, at noon with the Reverend Hester officiating. Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Telfair Street, in charge of arrangements in Augusta.

Survivors include his brother, S. Herbert Elliott Jr., of Augusta; nieces and nephews, Corrine Holman Elliott of Jackson Hole, Wy., Adrienne Elliott Eischeid of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Williamson S. Stuckey III of Augusta, Stuart Anne Stuckey of Eastman, Agnes Candler Gear of Valmeyer, Ill., Leighton Candler of New York City, N.Y. and Brandon Candler Henderson of Atlanta.
