Richard W Feder

Richard Warren Feder was born on November 22, 1923, in Greenwich, Connecticut, to Charlotte Catherine Cowperthwaite, age 22, and Peter Jay Peterson Feder, age 25. He had one younger sister, Eleanor. His family lived at 490 Milton Road and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

Richard was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1942. In high school he played varsity football and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was attending Cornell University when he enlisted April 7, 1943 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

Richard was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Vicksburg. USS Vicksburg, a Cleveland-class light cruiser, was the third ship of the United States Navy named after the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

The ship and crew participated in coastal bombardment duties during the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. We know from Richards discharge record and Marine Corps Muster Rolls that he spent 1 1/2 years overseas. He received his honorable discharge December 17, 1945 in Bainbridge, MD and returned home to Rye.

Richard moved to Florida in 1957 from Rye, N.Y. He married Lelya Mason Koerner on March 22, 1958, in Hernando, Florida. They had three children during their marriage.

He retired as manager of Morrison’s cafeteria, St Petersburg, after 30 years of service. He was a member of the St Pete Bottle Club and Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Gulfport

Richard Warren Feder died on July 14, 2005, in Summerfield, North Carolina, at the age of 81, and was buried in St Petersburg, Florida.

At the time of his death, survivors included a son, John C, Panama City, Fla.; two daughters, Susan E. Willans, Kansas City, Mo., and Mary C. Feder, Summerfield, N.C.; a sister, Eleanor Feder, St Petersburg; and a grandson, John Brown.
