Thornton Gerrish

Thornton Gerrish was born on December 26, 1913, in Brooklyn, New York, to Madeline Broun, age 34, and Thornton Gerrish, age 34. In Rye his family lived at 25 Seneca Street and were members of Christ’s Church.

Thornton enlisted in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps on May 20, 1942, in New York City, New York, during World War II. He was 28 years old.

He was promoted
to the grade of Captain in the Army
of the United States, at the First Military Air Transport Command Group, Stockton Field,
Calif,

Capt. Gerrish was classification officer at Stockton Field since
April when that former central California AAF pilot school was converted to a Military Air Transport
Base. Previously he served a tour of
duty in the ATC Caribbean Division
as adjutant of Waller Field, Trinidad.
After his return to the United States
in September 1944, Capt. Gerrish was
named adjutant of the former A.TC
Domestic Division headquarters in
New York City.

He was originally commissioned
second lieutenant on August 11, 1942
in the classification section of tie
Adjutant General’s Officer Candidate School. Fort Washington, MD.
Before entering the Army in 1942, Capt. Gerrish was associated with Muir & Co., advertising. New York City, Be attended Princeton University and the Loomis School.

Thornton married Marilyn Peterson on May 15, 1948, in Rye, New York. Thee had one child during their marriage.

He spent his career in advertising and for many years he wrote a sports column under the pseudonym “The Old Sport”

Thornton Gerrish died on January 9, 1984, in Rye, New York, at the age of 70.
