Malcolm Frank Gilchrist was born on November 4, 1916, in Courtland, Alabama, to Sarah B Hunt, age 19, and Malcolm F Gilchrist, age 22. In Rye his family lived on Milton Point and were members of Christ’s Church.

Malcolm served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II and Korea.

Miss Mary Land Stanton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Courtland Stanton, of this place, was married here this afternoon to Lieutenant Malcolm Frank Gilchrist, of Courtland, Ala., in Christ’s Episcopal church. The Rev. Wendell Phillips, the rector, preformed the ceremony, assisted by the Rev. John M. Lewis, of Waterbury, Conn.

Sisters Become Brides of Cadets

After graduation from West Point in 1939, Col. Gilchrist served briefly in the United States, then joined the Panama Coast Artillery Command in March 1940.

Lieut. -Col. Malcolm F. Gilchrist, U. S. A. , arrived this week from Panama and is with Mrs. Gilchrist and their son at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund C. Stanton, Milton Point. Mrs. Gilchrist is the former Miss Mary Stanton.

He returned to the United States in 1944 and shortly afterward became commander of the 388th AAA Battalion. Early in 1945 he and his unit sailed to Okinawa where they joined the Tenth Army in the last great land battle of the war.


Gilchrist Returning Home

Seoul, Korea delayed Lt. Col. Malcolm | Gilchrist, assistant chief of staff, G-l, XXIV Corps, sailed from here today on the USAT General Morton to visit his wife, Mrs. Mary Gilchrist, and their sons, Michael Lane, two and a half, and Malcolm Stanton, five, at Milton Point, Rye. Col. Gilchrist has served on the staff of Lieut. Gen. John R. Hodge, commanding general of the U. S. Armed Forces in Korea since October 1945. He was then appointed executive officer of G-l and in May 1946 was assigned as G-l.

A month after the occupation of Korea began. Col. Gilchrist was called to Korea where he was appointed executive officer, G-l, XXIV Corps. Seven months later he was made assistant chief of staff, G-l, a position he held until his current overseas duty tour ended this month. After visiting his wife, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Stanton of Rye, Col. Gilchrist will visit his mother, Mrs. P. A. Hunter in Florence, Ala.

Ret Col Malcolm F.-Age 73, past President of Columbia Military Academy and former employee for the State of Tennessee Department of Employment Security in Nashville, died Thursday November 14, 1991 at Maury Regional Hospital.

At the time of his death, survivors included his wife, Mrs. June Mill Gilchrist, Columbia; two sons. Col. Malcolm S. Gilchrist, Washington, D.C, Lt. Col. Michael L Gilchrist, Sr., Columbia; sister, Mrs. Mac (Nelle) Peebles, Columbia; half-brother, Martin Gilchrist Orangeburg, SO, four grandchildren, Malcolm Thomas Gilchrist, Dallas, TX, Anne Gray Gilchrist Atlanta, GA, Mid-Shipman Second Class Michael Lane Gilchrist, Jr., United States Naval Academy, Jack S. Gilchrist, Columbia; two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at the St Peter’s Episcopal Church. Burial was in the St John’s Churchyard with full military Honors.
