Norman Goldenberg was born in Manchuria, China Feb. 12, 1917, after his family fled from Russia., to Anita (Khaya) Donen, age 23, and Morris Goldenberg, age 22. He was a graduate of Baron Byng High School in Montreal and in 1937 the family moved to Rye. Before the war. Norman was working for Loews Fairmont Theatre in the Bronx and in Rye his family lived at 274 Purchase Street.

Norman enlisted October 3, 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He would spend two years serving in the Panama coast artillery.

On 10 February 1941, the Caribbean Defense Command was established as a theater command responsible for tactical control of the Panama Canal and Puerto Rican Departments, as well as bases in the Caribbean, eventually taking control of air and naval forces as well. It was co-located with the department headquarters at Quarry Heights, under the command of the department commander. During World War II, the department reached its peak strength in January 1943, when 68,000 men were under its control.

Pfc Norman Goldenberg Awarded Good Conduct Medal

HEADQUARTERS, PANAMA CANAL DEPARTMENT. In recognition of more than one year of active military service marked by exemplary behavior, efficiency and fidelity, the good conduct medal has been awarded to Pfc. Norman Goldenberg, of 274 Purchase Street, Rye, it was announced today by ihe Panama Coast Artillery Command. Pfc. Goldenberg was cited for fidelity through faithful and exact performance of duty, efficiency through capacity to produce desired results, and behavior such as to deserve emulation. Assigned to an anti-aircraft search light battery in Col. William H. Sweets harbor defense organization, Pfc. Goldenberg has served with the Coast Artillery forces here since January 2, 1943. His mother, Anita Goldenberg; his sister, Mrs. Rose Genender, and his brother, Benjamin Goldenberg, reside in Rye.

Norman was awarded the Good Conduct Medal in August of 1944 and his honorable discharge came on March 2, 1945.

He married Miriam (Mimi) Kahan on February 10, 1946, in Rye, New York and they had three children. The couple would change their name to Golden in November of 1946.

He was an executive of the Interstate Lumber and Mill Corp. in Byram, and president of the Lakeland Lumber in Croton Falls. A member of Kneses Tifereth Israel in Port Chester, he also belonged to the Port Chester Chapter of the Zionist Organization of America, B’nai B’rith, the Port Chester Jewish Center and the Port Chester High School Dad’s Club.

Norman Golden, 63, a lumber company executive who lived at 33 Meadowlark Road, Port Chester, died at home Saturday April 26, 1980 after a lengthy illness.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Miriam Kahan Golden; three daughters, Sheila Simon, Janet Golden and Audrey Kurtz; a sister, Rose Ghenender, and brother, Ben Goldenberg, both of Montreal, Canada; and a granddaughter, Joy Michele Simon.
