Description
Mary E Sparks Harvey was born in Columbus, Ohio, December 24, 1905 to Frank and Edith Sherry Sparks. She was a graduate of Northfield School in Ohio.
She married Walter P. Harvey of Rye on November 29,1924 in Hocking, OH, when she was 21 years old. The couple moved to Rye and Mary trained at Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York, to become a registered nurse.
In Rye they lived at 85 Theodore Fremd Ave and were members of the Presbyterian Church. Before entering the Army she was a nurse at United Hospital.
Mary enlisted in May, 1944 and served in the U.S. Army in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II.
The U.S. Army Nurse Corps (ANC) underwent a massive expansion during World War II, growing from fewer than 1,000 nurses in 1941 to more than 59,000 by the war’s end. These women served in every theater of the war, providing critical care at great personal risk, often just miles from the front lines.
Mary received her basic training in Atlantic City and was appointed a second lieutenant. In June 1945, she was promoted to the rank first lieutenant while stationed at Tilton General Hospital, Fort Dix, N. J.
We have no more info on Mary E. S. Harvey as of 1-20-2025.
We do know through the 1950 census her marriage to Walter P Harvey had ended. He had remarried and started a family with his new wife in Rye.
