Merton Haselton a native of Hudson, N. H., was born October 11, 1892 to Mary Emma McCoy, age 21, and Arthur Wilfred Haselton, age 29. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In Rye his family lived at 355 Grace Church St. and were members of the Presbyterian Church.
Merton was an electrical engineer employed by Westinghouse in Worcester, MA . He enlisted and served in the Army during WWI. After the war, he was vice president of the Teleregister Corporation, of which he was a founder in 1928. He directed the engineering staff of the corporation until World War II. In Rye his family lived at 355 Grace Church St. and were members of the Presbyterian Church.
Merton enlisted and served as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He served in the Army Air Forces Technical Service Command (ATSC). It was responsible for technical services in the Army Air Forces. It was redesignated as the Air Technical Service Command on July 1, 1945. Merton was a colonel in charge of radar and radio development for the Air Technical Service Command.
After the war, he returned to Teleregister and directed radio and electronics operations in connection with the concern’s manufacture of stock price quotation boards and other data-processing systems.
After his retirement 1957, Merton remained as a consultant to Teleregister. He also was instructor at the graduate extension school of the University of Connecticut in Stamford.
Merton was a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the Institute of Radio Engineers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the New England Society of Professional Engineering, the Tequesta Country Club and the Jupiter Beach Club.
Merton was a trustee of the American Yacht Club. He served as Chairman of the Rye Branch of the American Red Cross from 1959 to 1962.
Merton L. Haselton, formerly of 355 Grace Church St., who retired in 1957 as a vice president of the Teleregister Corporation, of which he was a founder in 1928, died on Monday October 17, 1966 in his home at South Dennis, Mass. He was 74 years old and had a winter home in Jupiter Inlet, Fla.
At the time of his death, he was survived by his widow, the former Elizabeth Dudley; a daughter, Mrs. W. Sterling Atwater Jr. of Barrington, R. I.; a grandson, William S. Atwater 111, and a brother, Page S. Haselton of Montclair, N. J.
A Memorial service was held at the Rye Presbyterian Church.
