Description
Allie Charles Hobby was born on September 30, 1923, in Rye, New York, to Marietta Brown, age 23, and Allie Hobby, age 27. Allie was a lifelong resident of Rye. In Rye his family lived at 9 Nursery Lane.
He graduated from Rye High School in 1942. Before entering the service, he was in the employ of William Edgar John & Associates, Milton Point.
Allie enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a PFC radio operator in the First Army and was wounded twice. The Purple Heart was awarded the 21-year old soldier September, 1944 when he was wounded in the shoulder during the fighting at the Battle for Brest, France. He was again wounded on February 27, 1945 in the right thigh in Germany.
Allie served overseas fifteen months and was honorably discharged in the fall of 1945.
Upon returning home to Rye after the war, he married Dorothy Van Loo of East Port Chester, CT, on December 24, 1946. He was a police officer for the city of Rye until his retirement in July of 1976.
As a member of the Rye Police Pistol Association, Mr. Hobby received numerous awards as an expert marksman. Upon his retirement, he became a Sexton at the Rye Presbyterian Church of which he was a member.
Allie C. Hobby; Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1942; Army, recipient of multiple purple hearts, member of the City of Rye Police Force, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at the age of 78.
At the time of his death he was survived by his loving wife, Dorothy, his sons, Barrie of Rye and William of White Plains and his daughters, Lon Cindrich of Somers and Lisa Johnston of Port Chester. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sons, Charles and Donald, and also by his sisters, Sarah Kelly and Margaret Romanello.
Funeral services were held at the Rye Presbyterian Church March 8, 2002.
