Walthall Gerald James was born in 1915 in Virginia to Pearl M James, age 24, and Robert James, age 28.He lived in Varina, Virginia, for more than 10 years from 1920 to 1930. He had two brothers William and Robert and four sisters.

He married his wife Della in the late 1930’s and in Rye his family lived at 7 Sylvan Place. Before the war he was working in Larchmont, NY for Arthur Mancini.

Gerald enlisted April 1, 1943 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the infantry in both North Africa and Europe and earned two battle stars and European theater of operations ribbon. He was discharged staff sergeant on Jan. 12, 1946, after three years of service.

Later that year, Gerald and his wife were the first to be approved for the veterans housing project which was located on the Post Road across from the Rye Country Day School.

Through his mothers obituary we know in 1969 he was living in Middle Island, Long Island.

Walthall Gerald James died July 14, 1988 and is buried in Calverton National Cemetery, Suffolk NY.
