William A James was born on December 31, 1926, in Henrico, Virginia, to Pearl M James, age 35, and Robert James, age 39. He had two brothers and four sisters and in Rye his family lived at 50 Grapal Street, Rye, NY . Before his enlistment he was employed at Ledmans Dress Factory in Port Chester, NY
William enlisted December 1944 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the Quarter Master Corps in the Quarter Master Laundry.
The Quartermaster Corps (QMC) provided essential field services during WWII, including mobile laundry and bath units that maintained hygiene, prevented disease, and boosted morale. Operating in specialized companies, they used truck-mounted units to clean uniforms, often alongside bath and fumigation units, and managed, at their peak, thousands of mobile, trailer-mounted laundry units.
He would reenlist for another tour of duty in January 1946. His brother Robert Terrell James also served in the Army
William A James died on March 16, 2005, in Greenwich, Connecticut, at the age of 78.
