John Patrick Lyons was born on April 10, 1924, in New York, New York, to Susan Meegan, age 30, and James Francis Lyons, age 34.

He had two sisters Anne and Nora. In Rye the family lived at 36 Halstead Place and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

Before the war John was working at the Apawamis Club. He enlisted August 21, 1942 and served with the U.S. Marines during World War II. See Muster Rolls

John served in the Third Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division. After intensive training, the division shipped out on 13 January 1944, and in 13 months made four major amphibious assaults.

They partook in the battles of Kwajalein (Roi-Namur), Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. The 4th Marines suffered more than 17,000 casualties. It was awarded two Presidential Unit Citations and a Navy Unit Commendation.

He married Ruth Amanda Olds in August of 1946 and they would have one son in 1955.

John Patrick Lyons died on December 14, 1990, in Washington, District of Columbia, at the age of 66.
