John Marx

John Marx was born on July 2, 1908, in St Louis, Missouri, to Leda Kuhn, age 30, and Walter S Marx, age 33. He was raised and educated in St. Louis.

He married Dorothy Van Orman on March 4, 1929, in New York City, New York. They had two children during their marriage. In 1940, John was working at the Goode Studios in NYC and in Rye his family lived at 4 West Bank Rd.

John enlisted in 1944 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served at the
Army Photographic Center in Astoria, Queens NY. The Army acquired a defunct studio in 1942 to produce films for the war effort, including the “Why We Fight” series. It was also responsible for training films and was home to many industry professionals, such as Frank Capra and John Huston.

Throughout his long career John was engaged in publishing work. He spent many years in Rye also living in San Diego, CA and Quincy, MA.

John Marx died on August 22, 1997, in Braintree, Massachusetts, at the age of 89 at the Elihu White Nursing Home.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his son Christopher of Cheshire CT, his daughter Mary Jackson of Milton, MA, 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. At his request there were no services.
