James Bloomfield Melick was born on September 9, 1921 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Helen Hoffer Melick, age 21, and James Melick, age 25. In 1930 the family was living in Queens, NY and in 1935 Detroit, MI. In 1940 they had moved to Rye and lived on Windcrest Road. James was then a student at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY.

James served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. On his draft card he was listed as 6’7 weighing in at 183lbs.

Camp Fannin was a U. S. Army Infantry Replacement Training Center and prisoner-of-war camp located near Tyler, Texas. It was opened in 1943 and only operated for four years, before closing in 1946. It is credited with training over 200,000 U. S. Soldiers, sometimes as many as 40,000 at one given time.

He was the beloved husband of the late Marjorie Melick; devoted father of William (Lisa) Melick, Cynthia Mason and June (Robert) Imhoff; dear stepfather of Kenneth Summerhayes; and loving grandfather of Melanie (Colin) Renner, James Mason, Andrea and Danielle Imhoff, Samantha and Angela Melick.
