Philip C. Mertz

Philip Carlyle Mertz was born on December 19, 1912, in Port Chester, New York, to Jane Carlyle McClenahan, age 25, and Louis Wiegand Mertz, age 29. He graduated from the Brunswick School in Greenwich and Yale, Class of 1935 where he was a member of the Fence Club and Wolf’s Head Society.

In Rye his family lived at 27 Mohawk Street. Prior to the war he was working for CIT Corp. on Park Ave in NYC.

Philip married Helen Linda Dermon on April 18, 1942, in Newton, Massachusetts. They had three children during their marriage.

While a resident of Rye, Phillip was a member of the American Yacht Club and was an outstanding sailor in the local regatta and on long distance ocean races.

He enlisted and served as an officer in the Navy during World War II. His service number was 113991.

Following the war, he went into business in Miami and lived in South Miami with his family.

Philip Carlyle Mertz a former resident of Rye, died in South Miami, Fla., on Sunday December 3, 1961, in Miami, Florida, after an extended illness at the age of 48, and was buried at sea.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Helen Linda; daughters, Wendy, Linda and Gretchen, and his brother, James C Mertz of Milton Road Rye, and West Pawlet, Vt.

Funeral services were held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in South Miami.
