Maurice R. Palermo

Maurice R Palermo was born on August 22, 1916, in Rye, New York, his father, Frank, was 30 and his mother, Concetta Maxzeo Palermo, was 33. He had one sister, Mildred. In Rye his family lived on Loder Street and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. Maurice was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1935.

An athlete who enjoyed many sports, Maurice played center for Rye High School’s first undefeated football team. He also played varsity football for Georgetown University and was a graduate of Springfield College In Massachusetts. He also received a master of arts degree from Columbia University.

He enlisted in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Maurice was in charge of the Italian Prisoner of War Camp in Hawaii. He married Claire Hyland on Aug 4, 1943 in Harrison NJ

After the war, Maurice taught math and social studies and coached sports teams for 40 years nearly all in Rye schools. He was known as Mr Midland” a nickname coined after the Midland Elementary School in Rye where Maurice was a teacher and assistant principal.

He also taught at Rye Country Day School and the Milton School in Rye and was principal of the Bernard MacFadden School in Tarrytown. Maurice was a president of the Rye Teachers Association and a first vice president of the New York State Teachers Association.

He was a member of the Rye Boy Scouts Council, and the Kiwanis and Resurrection Dad’s clubs. Maurice also was president of the Holy Name Society, chairman of the Resurrection Catholic Charities Appeal and a member of the first Parish Council.

“He was proudest of seeing the students grow up go on to college and business and make successes of themselves” said his wife Claire Palermo ΓÇÿThey often came to visit him even after many years”

Maurice R Palermo a lifelong Rye resident, retired school teacher and union leader died Saturday August 7,1993 of heart failure at United Hospital Medical Center in Port Chester. He was 76.

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife of the home address a daughter Claire Palermo Flower of Garrison a spokeswoman for West Chester County-Executive Andrew P O’Rourke, two sons Francis X Palermo of Guilford Conn and Maurice R Palermo of Reno,NV and four grandchildren.
