Mary Helen “Ricki” Ricketts

Mary Helen “Ricki” Ricketts was born on February 15, 1917, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Maude Dixson and Leonard Lester Ricketts. She had a sister Betty and a brother Robert. In Rye her
family lived at 52 Elmwood Avenue. and were members of the Presbyterian Church.

After graduating from high school Ricki attended United Hospital School of Nursing in Port Chester, NY, and graduated in 1938 as a Registered Nurse.

She worked in various hospitals and enlisted in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps in 1941. Ricki served honorably at a base hospital in New Hebrides in the South Pacific.

During World War II, the primary U.S. military base hospitals in the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) were located on the island of Espiritu Santo. Base Hospitals Espiritu Santo, code-named “Base Button,” became the largest U.S. base in the South Pacific and featured multiple hospital facilities to support the Allied war effort.

After her tour of duty she returned to civilian life continuing her education and received a Masters degree in Public Health in 1957. She was a nurse in several public health organizations until her retirement in 1976.

Ricki loved swimming, hiking and walking and was a long-time participant in the Duke City Marathon. Over the years she had won several medals in swimming and race walking in the Senior Olympics. Ricki was an active member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.

Mary Helen “Ricki” Ricketts died on April 12, 2008, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 91.

At the time of her death, she was survived by many nieces and nephews and was blessed to have many loving friends.
