Angelo J. Romano

Angelo J. Romano was born on July 22, 1915 in San Stefano del Sole, Italy to Joseph Romano and Thomasina Cioppa Romano. He had two sisters and in Rye his family lived at 51 Elmwood Ave. Angelo graduated from Rye High School in 1932.

Angelo enlisted December 18, 1943 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the Army from 1943-1946 with the 741st Railroad Operating Battalion at the Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland campaigns.

The 741st Railway Operating Battalion (ROB) was a U.S. Army unit during World War II, part of the Military Railway Service (MRS) responsible for running railroads in European Theaters (ETO) to supply Allied forces, handling logistics like running trains, managing tracks, and often associated with civilian railroads like the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio, with soldiers undergoing training before deployment to manage vital transportation networks after liberation.

He was honorably discharge March 26,1946. Angelo received the European, African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

He later worked as a printer/salesman for E. A.
Wilder Muth Inc. in Brooklyn. He belonged to the American Legion, Post 128 in Rye and enjoyed golf and boating. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church and Our Lady of Mercy Church.

Angelo John Romano, 84, of Rye City and Port Chester died on June 29, 1999 at Brandywine Nursing Home in Briarcliff Manor.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his sisters Sylvia Raneri and Jovina Romanello of Rye Brook, and four nieces and three nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Joseph Romano and mother, Thomasina Cioppa Romano.

The funeral was in Our Lady of Mercy Church.
Interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Rye Brook.
