Description
John J. Schindo was born February 18, 1923 in Rye, NY, son of John and Margaret McKillop Schindo. He had a sister Mary and a brother Robert. In Rye his family lived at 9 Summit Avenue and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.
John was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1941. In high school he was a member of the golf and basketball teams, played in the band and was a member of various clubs and organizations. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Following his graduation from Rye High School, Jack enlisted in the United States Navy as an apprentice seaman following the Pearl Harbor attack. His final tour of duty was in May 1957 aboard a heavy cruiser as Chief Petty Officer in the Mediterranean area.
After his discharge Jack worked for AMF (American Machine & Foundry) in York, PA where they were working on motorcycles for Harley Davidson and bombs for the Vietnam War.
In 1972, Jack and his wife, Beverly purchased Sturm Bros. in Ithaca and along with their son, John, operated the store until their retirement in 1987. He was an avid bowler and golfer and was a former member of the Country Club of Ithaca, Cornell University Golf Course, Newman Golf Course and the Hillendale Golf Course.
John J. ”Jack” Schindo, 93, died Thursday, June 23, 2016.
Jack was survived by his step daughter, Trinna Lee Iacovelli (Larry) and his grandsons, Hunter Schindo, Mark Iacovelli (Sara); Jeff Iacovelli (Sally) and Larry J. Iacovelli (Susan). In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Beverly Schindo, his son, John Schindo Jr. and his grandson, Temuchin Schindo.
A private graveside service with military honors was held at the Frear Memorial Park.
