Spelman, Joseph J.

Description

Joseph J. Spelman was born January 3, 1909 in New York City to William and Annie Murphy Spellman. He had one brother William and a sister Regina and in Rye his family lived at 95 Bradford Ave.

He married Mary B. Kingsley October 17, 1934 in Yonkers, NY. In 1940 the couple were living at his fathers house on Bradford Ave before moving to Pasadena, CA that same year. Mary died in California May 18, 1944 and Joseph returned home to Rye.

He enlisted June 15, 1945 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his honorable discharge Joseph worked for a time with the government in public relations for the department of Parks and Recreation.

He then was a salesman for Brooks Brothers in New York City. He lived in Rye until his retirement in 1977 when he moved to Crestwood Village in Whiting, NJ .

Joseph was a communicant and a server of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church, Whiting, Manchester; a member of its Holy Name Society; the Catholic War Veterans; and American Legion Post 502, Whiting and a former representative of Village 4, Crestwood Village, Whiting.

Joseph J. Spellman, of Manchester Township, died September 17, 1986 at home.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his second wife, the former Anne Doherty; a brother William, Mamaroneck, N.Y.; and a sister, Regina Sullivan, Caldwell.
