Description

Charles G. R. Tarrant was born Aug 28 1914 in Jacksonville Fla to Daniel and Georgianna Tarrant. Along with his sisters Minnie and Beatrice his brother Mark and his widowed mother his family lived at 144 Maple Avenue.

Charles was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1934. In high school he ran track and played football. In track he was elected captain of the team as a junior and he had already set four school records.

Out standing on a team which featured even balance rather than individual brilliance was Captain Charlie
Tarrant, Rye’s “midnight express”, who set a mark for future generations
of track stars in Westchester to shoot
at by compiling no less than 92 points during the season. Tarrant
went undefeated in the 100 and 220,
winning 12 straight sprint races, and
climaxed his High School career by
flashing 100 yards in 9.9 (timed on
three watches) against Greenwich,
faster than any Westchester school
boy ever has run before. In addition
to this, the Garnet leader set up a new Rye record of 22.5 in the 220, a mark
also under the county standard, and
created new Rye distances in the
broad and high jumps.

In 1935 Charles married Helen Blunt in Port Chester and they would have two daughters. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

After the war, for 37 years Charles worked at Arnold’s Bakery. In the early 1970s he opened the Cavalier Club Restaurant in Port Chester He closed it around 1980.

Charles was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Port Chester

Charles Tarrant a 75-year-old former restaurant owner who lived in Port Chester for more than 60 years fell six stories to his death from his apartment window early Monday September 18,1989.

Police were calling the incident an apparent suicide The Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office said yesterday. Charles had apparently died from injuries caused by the fall. Police said they were still investigating.

Relatives told authorities that Charles had been extremely depressed after returning from a recent vacation. Police said he had attempted suicide four years earlier.

Charles’s daughter Diane Jones of New York’ City recently moved into her father’s apartment at 350 S Regent St so a family member could check on him regularly. When she tried his bedroom door about 2:15 as she found it locked. She called relatives who finally pried open the door. From the veranda they saw his body on the lawn below.

Aside from his daughter Diane, he was survived by another daughter Sylvia Parham of Silver Springs Md. a sister Minnie Smith of the Bronx, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years in 1988
