Robert B. Thomas

Robert Bruce Thomas was born on January 15, 1921, in Pennsylvania to Sarah Caroline “Carrie” Andress and Martin Luther Thomas. He had two brothers and two sisters. He was a baseball and basketball player at Berwick High School where he graduated in 1938. Later he played for Tri County and Mocanaqua teams. In Rye his family lived on Milton Rd and were members of the Presbyterian Church.

Robert enlisted in U.S. Coast Guard. During World War II. He served four years with US Coast Guard in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters.

Miss Ann Washburn Becomes Bride of Robert B. Thomas
Miss Ann Washburn, daughter of Mrs. Edward Washburn of Milton Road, and the late Mr. Washburn was married Saturday to Robert B. Thomas, U. S. C. G., son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Thomas of Berwick, Pa. The ceremony took place in the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. John D. Gregory officiating.The bride was given in marriage by her mother. Mrs. Girvan Milligan, of Baltimore, the bride’s sister was her only attendant. Mr. Thomas was best man for his son. The bride wore an afternoon dress of royal blue velvet, brown accessories and a corsage of talisman roses. They will live in Atlantic City where Mr. Thomas is stationed.

After the war he graduated from Eckels College of Mortuary Science of Philadelphia in 1948. He became a licensed funeral director employed in Chestnut Hill and the Kelchner Funeral Home in Berwick.

For 25 years he was owner of Robert Thomas Insurance Agency. Elected as tax collector for Salem Township, he held that position for 28 years.

He served as president of the Luzerne County Supervisors Auditors and Tax Collectors Association for two years was a former member of Berwick Kiwanis Club and a life member of BPOE 38 Elks, Berwick.

He was a member of East Berwick Hose Co and Ranger Hose Co a member of American Legion Post 233 serving as past commander.

Bob was former director of Amerlcan Red Cross, a former captain for United Way, a past President of Salem PTA and the public address announcer for Berwick High basketball games for 22 years

Robert B “Bob” Thomas 88 formerly of 41 Bowers Road Berwick concluded his journey in this life at 4:10 ajn Wednesday June 3 2009 in Elmcroft of Berwick where he resided for the past 13 months

Bob joined his wife of 54 years the former Ann W Washburn of Rye NY who died Sept 6 1997.
