Richard C. Weiss

Richard Charlton Weiss was born on May 30, 1915, in Erie, Pennsylvania, to Freda A Wagner and Charles H Weiss. In Rye his families 94 Wappanocca Avenue. On both his draft card and enlistment record he listed his occupation as “actor”. At some point he dropped his last name, Weis, and was known as Richard Charlton.

Richard enlisted February 7, 1941 and served in the US Army during World War II. His service number was 32005281.

He married Helena Woolworth McCann in 1964 in Cuyahoga, Ohio. She was the daughter of Charles E. F. McCann and Helena Maud Woolworth McCann, and the granddaughter of Frank Winfield Woolworth, founder of the famous five-and-dime stores. Raised in privilege, she grew up in New York society, surrounded by the cultural and philanthropic traditions of the Woolworth family.
She was previously married to Winston Frederick Churchill Guest, the celebrated Anglo-American polo champion and member of the prominent Guest and Churchill families. Their marriage placed her at the heart of international society, with residences in both the United States and England, but it ended in divorce in 1944.

At the time of his marriage to Helena, he was director of the Sombrero Playhouse in Phoenix, Arizona which he founded in 1949. The Sombrero became during its heyday perhaps the major performing arts center between Dallas and Los Angeles, attracting celebrity players such as Groucho Marx, Tallulah Bankhead, Ginger Rogers, Gloria Swanson, Bob Cummings, Celeste Holm, Shelley Winters, Margaret O’Brien, ZaSu Pitts, Pat O’Brien, Walter Pidgeon, John Raitt and others.

Richard Charlton Weiss died on October 4, 2001, at the age of 86.
