Dr. David Alan Whitwell Wilson was born on June 9, 1917, in London, England, the sixth child of Philip Whitwell Wilson and Alice Selena Collins Wilson. At the age of two, he immigrated with his family to New York City.

He was a graduate of the Riverdale Country School, Princeton University, Class of 1938, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, Class of 1942.

Dr. Wilson was married in 1941 to Madeleine Anne Lenore deSilvia Holden and they had four children together. She died in 1996, and he then married Marjorie Bannon White on May 15, 1999, in Montpelier, Vermont.

Dr. Wilson enlisted March 6, 1944 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. A captain in the Army Medical Corps, Dr. Wilson served in Europe. He participated in the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged January 31,1946 and returned home to Rye.

He completed his medical training as an intern at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City and as a resident at both the Manhattan Veterans Administration Hospital and United Hospital in Port Chester, New York. Dr. Wilson was a Diplomat of the American Board Of Surgery, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

From 1945 until 1985, he was an attending surgeon at United Hospital. For many years, he was the Director of Surgery there, and from 1981 until 1985, he was the President of the Medical Staff. He was also a member of the hospital’s board of trustees from 1978-1985.

He lived in Rye, New York, until 1985 and retired to Montpelier, Vermont. After moving to Montpelier, he consulted on Medicare eligibility issues.

A lover of sailing, Dr. Wilson was a member of the American Yacht Club. He was the surgeon for the Rye Fire and Police Departments. In Montpelier, he sang in the choir of Christ Church.

He was one of the Vermont’s First Guardian Ad Litem, volunteers assigned by the court to promote and protect the best interests of children involved in legal proceedings. He was also a guide at Vermont’s State House.

David Alan Whitwell Wilson, M.D., died after a short illness on Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, at the age of 83.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Wilson was survived by his children, Holden Charles Wilson, of New Orleans, Louisiana, Prudence Wilson Barton of Lanesborough, Massachusetts, David M. Wilson, of Duxbury, Vermont, Mary Alice Williams, of Warren, Vermont, and his stepchildren, Jill Keating, of Wolcott, Vermont, Jeffrey White, of Georgia, Vermont, Janice Porter, of Putnam Lake, New York, and by their spouses. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
