Jeremiah J. Wolfe

Jeremiah J. Wolfe was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey August 10, 1905 to Mr. & Mrs. Anton Wolfe. He attended Cooper Union Accounting School, was a graduate of American Institute of Banking and of the Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University.

Jeremiah was married Violet Bidwell in the early 1930’s and he was working for The Bank of New York in NYC. In Rye his family lived at 14 Drake Ave.

Jeremiah served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a captain in the Southwest Pacific Area with the 2nd Engineers Special Brigade, 532nd Regiment, Engineers, Boat and Shore Battalion.

The 532nd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment (EBSR) was a specialized United States Army unit during World War II, serving as part of the 2nd Engineer Special Brigade The regiment was structured into Boat Battalions, responsible for operating landing craft (like LCMs and LCVPs) to ferry troops and equipment, and Shore Battalions, which managed beachhead logistics, construction, and defense.
In New Guinea, September 1943, the regiment landed elements of the Australian 9th Division at Red Beach near Lae and Scarlet Beach near Finschhafen.

In the Philippines, the unit participated in the massive amphibious assault on Leyte in October 1944 and subsequently assisted in the liberation of the Philippines through numerous coastal operations. Company F of the 532nd specifically conducted the amphibious landings at Corregidor.

Captain Wolfe is with the 2nd Engineers Special Brigade, the Amphibious unit which operated landing craft carrying infantry and supplies to the beaches in the Pacific area. He went overseas in January 1943 to New Guinea by way of New Zealand and Australia. He served 30 months in the Pacific, and has received the Purple Heart, Bronze Arrowhead for participation in assault landing, two battle stars in the Asiatic Pacific, and Distinguished Unit Combat citation.

He makes his home with his wife on Meadow Place. They have lived in Rye since 1932.

His Bronze Star citation read in part that he was decorated for meritorious achievement “in connection with military operations in Lae and Finschafen in New Guinea and in Dutch New Guinea from September 1943 to September 1944, as Regimental Communications Officer, he displayed special resourcefulness and initiative under the most adverse and difficult conditions…”

After his honorable discharge, Jeremiah would become vice-president of The Bank of New York with which he had been associated since 1925. He was a Rye resident for eighteen years prior to moving to Long Island in 1950. He was a former member of the Rye Kiwanis Club.

Jeremiah J. Wolfe, fifty-five, of Setauket, L. I., died suddenly at his home, on Saturday evening December 31, 1960

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Violet Bidwell Wolfe; his mother, Mrs. Anton Wolfe, and sister, Miss Jane Wolfe of Greenlawn L. I.

Funeral services were held at Port Jefferson, and interment was in Long Island National Cemetery Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY.
