Description

Rudolf Bernhard Sobernheim was born on October 11, 1910, in Berlin, Germany, to Clara Gitta Schiff and Moritz Sebastian Sobernheim. He had one sister Marianne and a brother Manfred Sobernheim. Rudolf was a graduate of Berlin university and the Law School of Columbia University, New York. In Rye his family lived at 24 Hix Ave.

Rudolf enlisted January 21, 1943 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served on New Guinea and
Leyte in the South Pacific with headquarters Intelligence of the U.S. 8th Army.

In World War II, the Eighth United States Army (often called the “Amphibious Eighth”) served as a major field army in the Southwest Pacific Theater. Activated in June 1944 under Lieutenant General Robert L. Eichelberger, the unit was instrumental in the liberation of the Philippines and the occupation of Japan.

From December 1944 to August 1945, the Eighth Army led the “Victor” operations to liberate the southern and central Philippines, including Leyte and Mindanao. The “Amphibious Eighth” earned this nickname for conducting over 60 amphibious landings’more than any other American field army or the entire U.S. Marine Corps during that period.

awarded to T4 Rudolph B. Sobernheim, of Rye. His mother, Mrs. Clara
Sobernheim. lives at 24 Hix Avenue.
The presentation was made by Lieut. Gen. Robert L. Eichelberger, in
whose headquarters Sergt. Sobernheim serves.

Rudolph married Barbara (Bobbie) Jean Robinson on May 29, 1952, in New Rochelle, New York. After a short wedding trip to Croton, N. Y.. they made their home in Washington, D. C. where he was assistant chief counsel with the office of salary stabilization.

Rudolph practiced law in both Germany and later the United States after emigrating. He served as a legal advisor for various governmental and international bodies.

Rudolf Bernhard Sobernheim died on April 1, 1994, in Arlington, Virginia, at the age of 83, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
