Walter Neale


Walter Castle Neale (Terry) was born on August 9, 1925, in New York City, New York, to Eleanor S Castle, age 24, and Walter Neale, age 26. He grew up in NYC and attended Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. In Rye his family lived at 171 Grace Church Street.

Terry entered Princeton from Lawrenceville in the summer of 1942. He left for military service as a U S Navy ensign serving from 1943-46 in the Pacific.

He married Barbara MacFarland Sheldon on July 19, 1945, in his hometown. They had two children during their marriage.

After his discharge, he graduated from Princeton's SPIA program in 1947. After receiving the B.A. from Princeton University in 1947, he received an M.A. from Columbia University in 1948 and the Ph.D. from the London School of Economics in 1953. He then moved to Austin, Texas, becoming an economics professor at the University of Texas. He also taught at Punjab University in India for one year.

Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Tennessee in 1968, he was an Instructor in Economics at Yale University, a Research Associate with the MIT India Project, a Senior Fulbright Lecturer at Panjab University in India, a Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Fellow in Lucknow, India, and Professor of Economics at the University of Texas at Austin.

Terry continued to teach at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville until retirement.

Walter Castle Neale, known as ''Terry", 78, died Saturday July 31, 2004 at his Knoxville, TN home.

At the time of his death he was survived by his wife, Anne Mayhew; sister, Louise Greene of San Marcos, TX; sons and partners, Jonathan Neale and Nancy Lindisfarne of Oxford, England, Peter Neale and Lucy Parker of Brighton, England, Douglas Brown and Cynthia Allin of Knoxville; daughters and partners, Caroline Chanock and Martin Chanock of Melbourne, Australia, Kathleen Brown and Emil Friberg, Jr. of Washington, D.C.; ten grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He will also be remembered by many former colleagues and students.

A gathering to celebrate and honor Terry will be held at a later date in Glencoe, Scotland, the place that he loved most. Contributions in Terry's memory may be made to an humane society, the Glencoe Heritage Trust, 2131 Bay Rd., Sharon, Mass. 02067, or a charity of choice.
