Bernard J. Mockler

Bernard James Mockler was born on November 7, 1926, in Mount Vernon, N.Y. to Sarah ‘Jim’ Elizabeth Ferguson and Bernard J Mockler In Rye his family lived on Forrest Avenue and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. Bernard was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1944.

He left high school his senior year and enlisted May 2, 1944 in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His service number was 713 10 18. Bernard served as S1c (ARM) V6 with Patrol Bombing Squadron 18 (VPB-18) (See Navy Muster Rolls)

In the U.S. Navy during WWII, S1c (ARM) V6 indicates a Seaman First Class (S1c) with an Aviation Radioman (ARM) rating who served in the U.S. Naval Reserve (USNR) under the “V-6” classification.

Patrol Bombing Squadron 18 (VPB-18) was a U.S. Navy squadron established on January 15, 1944, and redesignated from VP-18 on October 1, 1944. Flying PBM-3D/5 Mariners, the squadron operated in the Pacific Theater, conducting combat patrols from Okinawa, the China Sea, and Kyushu.

Bernard was honorably discharged June 1,1946.

He had eight children with Jean M. Mockler. They were Robbinsville, NJ area resident for over 30 years. Bernard was a graduate of Iona College and was a systems anayst for IBM. He was a member of Hightstown Elks, Peddie Golf Club and Princeton Indoor Tennis Association.

Bernard died on September 16, 1997, in Trenton, New Jersey, at the age of 70.
