Stephen R. Lesher
Early Life
Stephen Rosson Lesher was born on April 29, 1897, in Manhattan, New York, the son of Arthur Lawrence Lesher and Marion Alice Isaacs. He grew up as part of a large family connected to Rye, New York, including residence at “The Cedars.” His siblings included Robert Fuller Lesher, Richard Lesher, Theresa Sniffen Lesher, Margaret Esther Lesher, Constance Amelia Lesher, and Emilie Theresa Lesher.
World War I Service
Stephen R. Lesher enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 7, 1917, in Boston, Massachusetts. He served as a Private with U.S. Base Hospital No. 5.
He served overseas from May 11, 1917, to February 16, 1919, supporting the medical operations of the American Expeditionary Forces. Base Hospital units provided essential treatment and recovery care for wounded soldiers.
He was honorably discharged on April 5, 1919. His record shows no wounds in action.
Life After Service
After the war, Lesher worked in local mills and business operations, including association with the L. C. Chase Company. He maintained ties to Rye and spent time at a family summer property known as Lesher’s Island.
Stephen R. Lesher died on February 28, 1939, at the Veterans Hospital in New York City after a long illness.
He was survived by his wife, Marian Bodwell Lesher; his mother, Marion Alice Isaacs Lesher; his two children; his sisters, Theresa Sniffen Lesher, Margaret Esther Lesher, Constance Amelia Lesher, Emilie Theresa Lesher, and another sister noted in records; and his brothers, Robert Fuller Lesher and Richard Lesher.
