Description
James J. Farrell was born in East Islip, New York June 14,1906 to James S and Margaret O’Rourke Farrell. He had one brother William. In Rye his family lived at 56 Orchard Ave and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.
He married Ruth Donato October 22, 1939 and the couple lived in Harrison and James was employed by the County Transportation Company. He registered for the draft October 16, 1940 at the age of 34. He was then working at Playland as part of the WPA Project.
The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was an ambitious employment and infrastructure program created by President Roosevelt in 1935, during the bleakest years of the Great Depression. Over its eight years of existence, the WPA put roughly 8.5 million Americans to work. Perhaps best known for its public works projects, the WPA also sponsored projects in the arts – the agency employed tens of thousands of actors, musicians, writers and other artists.
At 36 , James enlisted November 6, 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged November 7, 1945
