John J Kedney was born on February 27, 1914, in Port Chester, New York,to John Thomas mid Eleanor Brennan Kedney. He had six siblings sisters Winifred and Agnes and brothers Peter (Roy), Charles, Donald and Kenneth.

In Rye his family lived at 189 Purchase Street and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. John , known as “RIP”, was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1932. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

During World War II, Rip served in the US Army. He was awarded the Purple Heart

After the war he owned Rip’s Dinette on Purchase Street in Rye for 18 years. He closed the dinette in 1971 and continued to work for other restaurants in Westchester County until he was in his 60’s.

He was a volunteer firefighter for the city of Rye and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1156 in Mamaroneck. A marriage to Adamarie Kedney ended in divorce.

John J. “Rip” Kedney Sr, a longtime Rye resident died Thunday at United Hospital Medical Center in Port Chester. He was 80. He was survived by a son, Jack of Mamaroneck; a daughter, Patricia Ann Vrooman of Poughkeepsie; a stepdaughter, Bonnie Cbolum of Rhode Island; a sister, Agnes Arndt of Rye; a brother, Kenneth of Rye; and fow grandchildren. . Two brothers; Ray and Charles; died earlier.
