Douglass Williams Mabee


Douglass Williams Mabee was born on October 12, 1914, in Troy, New York, to Edna Louise Marvin, age 32, and Douglass Walter Mabee, age 34. He grew up in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and was a graduate of Hotchkiss, 1934 and Yale, 1937.

Douglass married Prudence Brattle Mather on July 27, 1940, in Loudonville, New York. They had five children during their marriage. In Rye his family lived on Mohawk Street.

Douglass served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was Lt. Cmdr. on USS Ira Jeffery DE-63 escorting convoys in North Atlantic. (See Muster Roll) Ira Jeffery served as a destroyer escort (DE-63), escorting numerous troop convoys across the Atlantic to the British Isles and North Africa through 1944. On one return trip in December 1944, she helped tow the torpedoed USS Fogg to the Azores.

After the war, Douglass was a salesman for 25 years for National Folding Box, a family company that merged with Federal Paper Board Company.

He was former vice president and director of the Adirondack Trust Company. Douglass was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Holland Society of New York. He was most proud of his involvement and founding of the Farm Neck Golf and Country Club, Martha's Vineyard, Mass.

Douglass Williams Mabee II, age 89, of Ponte Vedra Beach, formerly of Rye, N.Y., Edgartown, Mass., Stratton Mnt., Utah and Linville Ridge, N.C. died March 19, 2004 at Vicar's Landing, Ponte Vedra Beach after a short illness. His wife predeceased him on Mar. 24,2004, in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.

At the time of his death, he was survived by son, Douglass Mather Mabee, Saratoga Springs; daughters, Martha Welles Mabee, Ponte Vedra Beach and Maria Mabee Mason, Bainbridge Island, Wash.; grandchildren, Alexander Foroyer Flowers, Jessica Francis Mabee, Douglass Timothy Mabee, Brittain Mather Mason, Adian Allen Mason; great-grandson, Ethan Mather Flowers.

Memorial services were held March 23, 2004 at Vicar's Landing, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. He was buried in Saratoga Springs, New York.
