Ercole Joseph Gioseffi


Ercole (Arthur) Joseph Gioseffi was born in New York June 28,1915 to parents Ercole and Josephine Paternoster Gioseffi. He had four brothers: Samuel, Aurelio, Mike, and Nicholas. and in Rye his family lived at 28 High Street . Arthur was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1934.

He enlisted in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Arthur served in the 146th Engineers Combat Battalion.

The 146th Engineer Combat Battalion was attached to the 1171st Engineer Combat Group, V Corps in England prior to D-Day. They were tapped, along with the 299th Engineer Combat Battalion to provide personnel for the Special Engineer Task Force, formed in March-April 1944 to deal with the shoreline obstacle belt created by the German in early 1944.

On OMAHA they formed joint Army-Navy demolition teams with nineteen Naval Combat Demolition Units.

They successfully destroyed anti-boat obstacles to clear the way for the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions. Those teams suffered probably the heaviest casualties of any units on D-Day. There are a large number of online resources for the 146th.


After the War Arthur would marry Evelyn Gallo. The would have two sons and a daughter and the family lived in Old Greenwich.

Ercole (Arthur) Joseph Gioseffi died at Greenwich Hospital on August 7, 1963. He was 48 years old.
