Below are the Biographies of two veterans named Nicholas LaRussell



Nicholas J. Larussell

Nicholas J. LaRussell, Jr. was born on November 30, 1927, in Rye, NY, the son of Nicholas and Mary Genovese LaRussell. He had four sisters Marion, Carmella, Anna and Rose and two brothers Paul and Angelo . In Rye his family lived at 180 Railroad Avenue. Nicholas was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1945.

He enlisted right out of high school and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served one year in Japan with the 8th Army Signal Corps, 58th Signal Battalion.

The 58th Signal Battalion (often referred to in parts as companies) was activated on February 10, 1941, at Camp Peay, Tennessee, and played a crucial role in World War II, specifically in the Pacific Theater. The unit was involved in the campaigns of New Guinea and Luzon, and later served in the occupation of Japan.

After his honorable discharge February 19, 1946, he returned home to Rye and went on to obtain an Associate's Degree. He married Paula LaPorto and they had one child. Nicholas was employed by the Sheetmetal Workers Union Local #38, in Brewster, NY, for over sixty years.

He married Stephanie Lovelace in 1993 in Mamaroneck, NY. They moved to Ogdensberg, NY, in 1997.

Nicholas J. LaRussell, Jr., 90, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his loving wife, Stephanie; his daughter, Linnea Esposito and her husband, Joseph, of White Plains, NY; one brother, Paul LaRussell and one sister, Ann Hannah; two grandchildren, Michael and Julia and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by five siblings.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Cathedral with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.


Nicholas G. LaRussel

Nicholas G. LaRussell was born August 3, 1921 in Port Chester to Nicholas and Grace Balcom LaRussell. He was raised and educated in Port Chester. In Rye his family lived at Blind Brook Lodge.

Nicholas G. enlisted March 10, 1943 and served in the US Coast Guard in WWII. On November 13, 1943 he married Dorothy L. Jones in Rye, NY.

He served on a Combat Coast Guard Cutter and participated in nine amphibious assaults in the Pacific Theatre of War. During World War II, U.S. Coast Guard cutters operated under the U.S. Navy and were integral to combat operations in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. These versatile "maritime workhorses" transitioned from peacetime law enforcement to high-stakes anti-submarine warfare and amphibious landing support.

Nicholas G. received his honorable discharge January 11, 1946 and returned home. For decades he owned his own business, LaRussell Fire Equipment in Port Chester.

Locally, he was a member of Harry Howard Hook & Ladder Co. #1 of the Port Chester Fire Department for 45 years. He was a Past Captain. He loved model railroading and was a member of a model railroad club in Harrison, NY.

Nicholas G. LaRussell of Port Chester, NY, died June 18, 2002. He was 80.

At the time of his death, he was survived by daughter Diane Cockren, of Carmel, NY; sister Edna LaRussell of Port Chester, and two grandsons. Family members who died earlier include his wife Dorothy LaRussell, his father Nicholas J. LaRussell, his mother Grace LaRussell.

Services were held at James J. Gunipero Funeral Home, Inc. Interment will follow at Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye, NY..
