Charles Winston Becannon was born on May 8, 1925, in Burlington, Vermont, his father, Charles, was 44 and his mother, Gladys, was 39. He had one sister Janet. In Rye his family lived at 19 Purchase St.

Known to his friends as Winston, he attended Rye High School. He left school in his junior year in February 1943.

Winston Becannon Enlists

Winston enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served on the USS PC 1191.

His ship was a submarine chaser and escorted convoys between New York – Guantanamo Bay and Panama. He was discharged in March 1946. See Muster Rolls

Winston married Elizabeth H. Sullivan on September 28, 1946, in Harrison, New York. They had one child during their marriage. He served as a police officer in Rye for many years. until retiring to Virginia.

Winston Becannon retired October 4, 1978. He stepped down at age 53, after serving almost 25 years on the Rye police force. He was well known to Rye residents as the man who clocked drivers with his radar “gun” and issued impressive numbers of speeding tickets to commuters, chauffeur-mothers and out-of-towners alike.

Charles Winston Becannon died on March 16, 2001, in Richmond City, Virginia, at the age of 75, and was buried in Valhalla, New York.
