Description

Howard Leonard Bergman was born on August 27, 1907, in New Jersey to Annie Bloch, age 28, and Simon Bergman, age 38. In Rye his family lived at 294 Forest Avenue.

Howard was an avid golfer and belonged to Metropolis Golf Club, where for many years he was club champion. In 1940 he was employed by the Lily- Tulip Corporation.

Howard enlisted and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He served as an Intelligence Officer and Aerial Photo Interpreter and at Group Headquarters of the 380th Bomb Group.

The history of the 380th dates back to 28 October 1942 when the unit was established. The 380th Bombardment Group (Heavy) was activated on 3 November 1942 at Davis–Monthan Field, Arizona. Originally, the 380th Group consisted of four squadrons, the 528th, 529th, 530th, and 531st Bombardment Squadrons.

Shortly after being activated, the group moved to Biggs Field, Texas, where it underwent extensive combat training. After completing training, the 380th moved to Lowry Field, Colorado, to undergo final combat training. The 380th was part of Fifth Air Force, and was known as the Flying Circus and as the King of the Heavies.

This unit served in the Western Pacific and West Pacific from April, 1943 until the end of the war.

By 1950 Howard had moved to Manhattan and was working as a sales promoter for a magazine company. He married Marie Thérèse Sacco Albanèse in 1956 in New York City, New York. They had two children during their marriage.

He died on August 19, 1990, in Santa Barbara, California, at the age of 82.
