James J. Black was born on March 1st, 1930, in Portchester, New York. He lived in Rye for most of his life on 43 New Street with his Mother Gertrude, father William, and six siblings: Thomas, Travis, Vincent, John, Charles, Carol, and Marion. James attended grammar and middle school at Resurrection in Rye New York, and graduated from Resurrection on June 25th, 1944. During his time at Resurrection, James received a regents honor certificate after attaining an general average of over 90% on the state board of regents examinations, which then led to him winning a partial scholarship to Cardinal Hayes High School. James was a Rye High School Graduate, class of 1948. His nickname was “Jim” and he was known as the one who always showed up late. Above his picture stands the quote, “The late Mr. Black…never in before 8:50 A.M.” During his high school career he participated in both Football and Track. James served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

James Joseph Black, 87, passed away Friday, March 24, 2017. He was born March 1st, 1930 in Port Chester, New York to William Black and Gertrude (Zirkel) Black. He was a Roman Catholic who attended St. Marys Catholic Church in Batesville. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Batesville Optimist Club, and enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents William and Gertrude Black; his first wife Timmie and his second wife Jeanette; five brothers: Thomas Black, Travis Black, Vincent Black, John Black, and Charles Black; and two sisters Carol Maragnano and Marion Fredricks.
He is survived by three sons: Chris Black, Jim Black, and Tom Black; two daughters Lynn Turnbull and Sally McAndrews; one sister Barbara McConville; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
A memorial service is planned to be held Saturday, April 1st beginning at 11 AM at St. Marys Catholic Church.
