John Joseph Brice was born on April 14, 1921, in Tannersville, New York, to Mary Ellen Garrety, age 36, and Oscar Thomas Brice, age 32. He had two older sisters Helen and Margaret. In Rye his family lived at 21 Brookdale Place and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.
John was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1937. He was a member of the National Honor Society and active in the Stage Coach, Self Reliant and other various clubs. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
John was a member of the 20th Armored Division of the Army three and one-half years with six months in the European theater
The 20th Armored Division departed Boston on 6 February and arrived at Le Havre, France, 19 February 1945. On arrival it was sent to Buchy for a month’s assembly, preparation, and additional training. It then moved through Belgium to Langendernbach, Germany, 10 April.
After considering breaking up the new division to provide replacements for the veteran armored divisions under his 12th U.S. Army Group, General Omar N. Bradley, sent the unit to Marktbreit, where the Division was attached to the III Corps; 20 April. Three days later, it was detached and reassigned to the XV Corps, Seventh Army, at W├╝rzburg, Germany.
Following V-E Day, the Division performed Occupation duties, returning to the U.S. in August 1945, slated for participation in the then-planned invasion of Japan. The Division reported to Camp Cooke, CA, for amphibious assault training, but after the atomic bombs were dropped and Japan surrendered, the unit was inactivated on 2 April 1946 at Camp Hood in Texas.
John married Earline Kimbrell at The Little Church Around the Corner on November 14, 1946. The couple then left by plane on a wedding trip to Nassau. John was a graduate of Cooper Union Art school and was an industrial designer associated with Joseph B Platt. He and his wife lived and worked in New York City.
John Joseph Brice died on March 26, 1965, in Manhattan, New York, when he was 43 years old.

Wow, this is exciting. I only met my Uncle John twice, as he lived in NYC and his sister Margaret, my mother, met a sailor during the war who had shore leave in NYC, and they married after his ship was bombed (the USS Brownson). A third of the men on the ship died after being bombed. Mom and Dad moved to South Bend, IN, where Dad was stationed until he received an honorable discharge around the time Japan surrendered. My parents, James Wylie Browne from Chicago and Margaret Theresa (née Brice) from Rye, NY, eventually settled in Illinois and bought a house in Glen Ellyn in 1951. They had five children: twin girls, another girl, a boy, and then another girl. The four of us girls are still kicking as of March 18, 2026, and we are scattered across Texas, Indiana, Illinois, and Ontario, Canada. Sadly, our brother died in 2021.
