Thomas R. Candido was born to Natale and Carmela Giancola Candido, on Jan. 20, 1910 in Stamford, where he attended school.

He married Mary Romano at the Church of the Resurrection in 1933. They lived at 127 Maple Ave. and had one daughter.

Thomas enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a private in the Army’s 44th Infantry Division. The 44th Infantry Division landed in France via Cherbourg Naval Base, 15 September 1944, and trained for a month before entering combat, 18 October 1944

The division participated in the following campaigns during World War II: Northern France (25 July – 14 September 1944),
Rhineland (15 September 1944 – 21 March 1945 ,Ardennes-Alsace (16 December 1944 – 25 January 1945 and Central Europe (22 March 1945 – 11 May 1945. It spent 190 days in combat and received three Distinguished Unit Citations.

After the war, Thomas worked as a truck driver for a tailor. Later, he owned and operated, Local Tailors, 256 Sound Beach Ave., in Old Greenwich for 25 years. He lived at 127 Maple Ave., Rye, for more than 50 years before moving to 12 Jennifer Road, Darien, Conn., where he lived with his wife, Mary Romano Candido.

He was a member of the Rye Volunteer Fire Department and a parishioner at the Church of the Resurrection.

Thomas R. Candido, retired tailor and former Rye resident, died Saturday January 29, 1983 at United Hospital in Port Chester after a month-long illness.

At the time of his death, in addition to his wife, he was survived by his daughter, Tina Gomez, of Darien, and one grandson, also of Darien.
