David H. Carpenter

David H. Carpenter was born July 13, 1927, in Rye, N.Y., to the late Thomas King Carpenter and Ida May (Hayward) Carpenter. In Rye his family lived at 20 Onondaga St.. David was a graduate of the Choate School.

David served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He served in the Merchant Marine Cadet Corps at Kings Point, L. I.

Training For Maritime Service
David H. Carpenter, of 66 Milton Road, has reported to the Merchant Marine Academy Basic School at Kings Point, for training as a cadet mid-shipman.

After the war, he graduated Princeton University in the class of 1949, where he was a member of the Cottage Club.

David married Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Reeves Carpenter in White Plains, New York, on June 24, 1950, when he was 22 years old.

His working life was spent primarily with manufacturing companies that made machine tools (Bullard and Cone-Blanchard), mechanical power transmission products (Browning), and gas turbine engines (Lycoming). Most of his adult life was spent in Fairfield, Conn., but many years were spent in Woodstock, Vt., Maysville, Ky., and Ponte Vedra, Fla.

David Hayward Carpenter, 84, of Southern Pines, died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at St. Joseph of the Pines Nursing Center, in Southern Pines, NC.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Reeves Carpenter, in 2003; and his second wife of six years, Jane Bell Carpenter, in 2011. Also preceding him in death were one brother and one sister.

David was survived by a son, David Reeves Carpenter and wife, Donna, of Bakersfield, Calif.; two daughters, Elizabeth Keyworth and husband, Alan, of Norwalk, Conn., and Karen Desmond and husband, Joe, of Danvers, Mass.; and four grandchildren.
