Frederick Danzig was born in Massachusetts September 17, 1925 to Phillip and Sylvia Levin Danzig. He had one brother Irving and in Rye his family lived at 10 Hewlett Ave.

Fred was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1943. One year later he would find himself wading ashore to a beach in Normandy, code named Omaha.

He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Fred enlisted August, 1943 and had his basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia.

He was in the European Theater Of Operations from June, 1944 thru December,1945. Fred served with the 29Th Infantry Division, 116Th Infantry Regiment, B Company, First Platoon.

On June 6, 1944, during the Invasion of Normandy, Fred’s regiment’s Company B waded ashore around 07:26 am and suffered heavy casualties, although one of its boat teams took Vierville.

By the end of the day Company B had been reduced to 28 men. The regimental command group landed around 07:30 am with assistant division commanders Brigadier Generals Norman Cota and Canham. They rallied the men for the attack and around 08:30 Cota discovered an exit off the beach, through which men began advancing.

In July-August 1944 the regiment would fight in the Battles Of St. Lo, Vire, and the Battle for Brest. Fred was wounded in action at Brest in September 1944. He would recover at a hospital in England and return to his unit to continue on their drive thru Germany.

After the surrender he served with U. S. Army Occupation Unit In Berlin, Germany in the summer of 1945.

Fred received The Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, Presidential Unit Citation With Cluster and Five Battle Stars.

He was honorably discharged January 1, 1946.

After the war, Fred was a newspaper writer for the Port Chester Daily Item. He would spend his career in media and retired as Editor in Chief of Advertising Age Magazine.

Fredrick Paul Danzig, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2011.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Edith, his children, Steve, wife Maureen; Ellen Kay, husband Mark Grisar. He was a loving and devoted grandfather to Jenna, PJ, Noah and Paige. He was predeceased by his parents and brother Irving.

Funeral Services were held on May 1, 2011 at noon, the Riverside Memorial Chapel in Mount Vernon.
