Many Attend Send-Off For Selectees Entering Service
One of the largest crowds since the beginning of Selective Service gathered at the Mamaroneck station on Wednesday to send off the latest contingent of boys entering the United States Army. The Mamaroneck High School band met the group of 51 selectees at the beginning of Mamaroneck Avenue and furnished musical escort to the station and until the 2:27 train arrived, which started them on their way to Camp Upton.
The Reverend Father Julius Staniewicz, Roman Catholic priest from St. Vitos Church in Mamaroneck, gave a very inspiring talk to the selectees. James Gillies, chairman of the Mamaroneck-Rye Draft Board also gave a short pep talk. Among those present were Mayor Livingston Piatt of Rye, Mayor James T. Corrigan of Mamaroneck, Supervisor Frank S. McCullough, Rye Police Chief Howard Searles, and other Mamaroneck officials.
The next group to leave from Mamaroneck and Rye, will take their physical examinations the latter part of this month. Those who pass the examination will receive a 14-day furlough, following which they will entrain from Rye station some time in November. This will be the first group to leave from Rye, and it has been arranged to have departures alternate between Mamaroneck and Rye. Those who left on Wednesday included Edward Delahanty, 100 Purchase Street
