William Jennings Demorest Jr. was born on February 25, 1922, in New York to Wealthy Albro Lewis, age 27, and William Jennings Demorest, age 31. In Rye his family lived on Upper Dogwood Lane. William was a attended of Hotchkiss School and Williams College, class of 1943, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in physics.

William enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army from Officers Candidate School at Fort Monmouth, N. J. and further training Harvard University. He was later stationed with the Signal Corps in Manila.

Lt William Jennings Demorest Jr. married Constance Gould September 14, 1946 in Union Church, Waban, MA. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Joseph C. MacDonald. The couple then moved to Pittsburgh, Penn. There, William attended Carnegie Tech and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in engineering..

William was an engineer who worked for more than 35 years for Honeywell. He was a product manager when he retired in 1987 and had worked at the company’s offices in Hartford, CT., Chicago and Fort Washington.

William was active in the National Junior tennis League, now called the Philadelphia Youth Tennis Association, for more than 20 years as an instructor and college placement counselor. He taught mostly pre-teens and teenagers from the inner city and helped many of them get into college. Besides tennis, he enjoyed golf.

He was a volunteer for the Eighteenth Street Development Corp., a nonprofit organization that rehabilitates homes and other facilities in Philadelphia.

William J. Demorest Jr., 78, of Berwyn, PA died of cancer Sunday July 2, 2000 at Bryn Mawr Hospital.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife of 53 years, Constance Gould Demorest; a son, Stephen B.; two daughters, Lawrie E. and Amy P.; three sisters; and three grandchildren.
