Description

Betty Jane Doyle

Elizabeth “Betty Jane” Doyle was born Aug. 13, 1915, in Youngstown, Ohio to Ethel McGill and Joseph Sloane. Her mother died in 1928 and by 1930 she was living with her aunt and uncle in Rye at 22 Sanford Street. Betty was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1934.

Four years later, she graduated from the Bellevue Nursing School in New York City as a registered nurse. She was also one of the first graduates of the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Pennsylvania.

Betty enlisted in 1943 and served during World War II in the US Army Nurses Corp.

The U.S. Army Nurse Corps (ANC) underwent a massive expansion during World War II, growing from fewer than 1,000 nurses in 1941 to more than 59,000 by the war’s end. These women served in every theater of the war, providing critical care at great personal risk, often just miles from the front lines.

Betty was stationed in Hawaii and that’s where she met her future husband. In 1944 Betty Doyle married Joseph Di Giacomo. They had four children.

After the war, the newlyweds returned to the mainland in 1945 where Betty continued her education in medicine. She was one of the first graduates from the Doman and Delagado’s Method of Neurological Organization in Philadelphia.

Betty was a nurse more than 40 years. “Mom was an outgoing and loveable woman who was a nurse in Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, Illinois and for Texas for 43 years,” her daughter, Michelle Di Giacomo of San Antonio said. “Mom always wanted to row a boat down the Mississippi River but the Coast Guard would not let her,” Di Giacomo said. “She also learned how to fly a biplane and was going to get her license until they learned about her heart murmur.”

Elizabeth “Betty Jane” Doyle Di Giacomo, a nurse during World War II, died August 1, 1995 of heart failure in San Antonio, TX. She was 79.

At the time of her death, she was survived by her daughter Michelle, her three sons, Peter Di Giacomo of Boulder, Colo., John Di Giacomo of San Antonio and Steven Di Giacomo of Dallas; and five grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death in 1990.

A memorial service was held at the Quaker Meeting Room and Methodist Student Services Building..
