James H. Dwinelle

James Howard Dwinelle was born on July 3, 1900, in Tully, New York, to Mary Emily Van Hoesen, age 40, and William Henry Dwinelle, age 48. He was a graduate of Syracuse University and Syracuse University Medical School.

In Rye he lived at 131 Purchase Street and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. James was a dermatologist and started his practice in Rye in 1926.

James served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. As a lieutenant colonel in the US Army Medical Corps he was known for his treatment of tropical diseases.

ALSO CHIEF OF FIELD PARTY FOR DIVISION OF HEALTH AND SANITATION, THE INSTITUTE OF INTER-AMERICAN AFFAIRS, IN THE REPUBLIC OF HAITI, DECEMBER 5, 1944 TO JANUARY 31, 1946. SERVICE INVOLVED FINDING AN EFFECTIVE CURE FOR THE TROPICAL DISEASE YAWS.

After the war, James returned to his practice in Rye. He had been on the staff of the United Hospital and was a consultant to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Harrison. He had also been an attending consultant at the Kingsbridge Veterans Administration Hospital. He was a member of the Rye Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. James Howard Dwinelle, 74, a resident of
Rye since 1926, died Thursday April 10, 1975 at United Hospital.

At the time of his death, he was survived by a brother,
Dana Van Hoesen Dwinelle of
Brewerton, N. Y., seven nieces and
four nephews.
