Charles “Chick” E Gedney was born on November 18, 1923, in Rye, New York, to Elsa L Kreitler, age 27, and David Leslie Gedney, age 28. He had two brothers Albert and Leslie. In Rye his family lived at 90 Grapal Street and were members of the Presbyterian Church.

Chick decided on a career in the Merchant Marine as a teen. He was a graduate of the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy and served in both the Atlantic and the Pacific during WWII.

He married Catherine Jean Oberg on July 7, 1950, in New York City, New York. They had three children during their marriage.

During 40 years working for American President Lines, Chick became senior fleet Captain. He completed 17 Round the World voyages & visited 30 countries.

Captain Charles Gedney, a long time Lamorinda resident departed this life on March 24, 2015, in Oakland, California,. He was 91.

He goes to join his beloved wife Cay, daughter Beth & other loved ones who passed before him. Son Chuck, daughter Cathie, granddaughters Rachel & Michal and great-grandchildren Kenley, Lilly & Cooper will miss him.
