Charles Oliver Gedney

Charles Oliver Gedney was born on October 10, 1909, in Rye, New York, to Emma May Weeks, age 26, and John C Gedney, age 30. He had four brothers and three sisters. In Rye his family lived at 209 Oakland Beach Ave and were members of the Presbyterian Church. Charles was a Rye High School graduate class of 1928.

He enlisted November 28,1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Charles served in the Medical Detachment of the 203rd Field Artillery Battalion. The Battalion landed on Omaha Beach, Normandy in phases, from June 23 to the 30 1944. The batteries were firing almost immediately after the landing in support of the American infantry and tanks fighting through the “bloody bocage.”

The battalion fought through Normandy, the Ardennes and the Rhineland. It fired approximately 68,000 rounds, traveled 800 miles, crossed six major rivers, and was in combat 318 days, less five days rest periods. Charles was honorably discharged October 31, 1945.

He married Marguerite Carver on September 28, 1946, in Eastchester, New York. They had four children during their marriage. The family would live in Tuckahoe, NY and Charles worked for Westboro Auto in New Rochelle where he was also a member of the American Legion.

Charles O. Gedney, former Rye resident, 58, of 26 Joyce Road, Tuckahoe, died suddenly at his home, Tuesday March 4, 1969.

At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife Marguerite; three sons, Charles, Jr., Peter and Paul, and a daughter, Susan. He was also survived by four brothers, Howard of White Plains, John, Robert and Richard of Rye and three sisters, Mrs. Helen Martin and Mrs. Meri Babbitt of Ryeand Mrs. Muriel Gonseth of Miami, Fla.
