EARLY LIFE

Gerald J. Fitzgerald was born about 1891 in Kilcolgan, Ireland, the son of James J. Fitzgerald and Ellen Murphy.

Like many Irish immigrants of his generation, he came to the United States seeking steady employment and improved living conditions.

He settled in Rye, New York, where he lived at 78 Purchase Street.

WORLD WAR I SERVICE

Fitzgerald enlisted in the United States Army on November 21, 1917, at Fort Slocum, New York.

He served in multiple Aero Squadrons and trained at Kelly Field in Texas.

He was promoted to Corporal on April 12, 1918, and later returned to Private.

His record indicates no wounds received in action and no overseas service. He was honorably discharged on January 18, 1919.

POSTWAR LIFE

Fitzgerald served in the Rye Police Department and later worked for S. H. Graham Company for 37 years.

Gerald J. Fitzgerald died on September 24, 1945, at United Hospital.

He was survived by his wife, Mabel Travis Fitzgerald, and a brother, James.
