George Gordon was born on December 18, 1920, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, to Catherine Anna Peterson, age 22, and George Gordon, age 24. His father was a teache at Rye High School and in Rye his family lived at 31 Rosemere Street and were members of the Presbyterian Church.
George attended Rye High School, was graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass. and the University of New Hampshire. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.
George enlisted in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served three years with the Army in the 20th Armored Division.
Sergt. Gordon Tank Mechanic
Sergt. George Gordon 3rd, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Gordon, Jr. , of 6 Cowles Avenue, is among the graduates in the class of skilled tank mechanics which recently completed the course at the Armored School Tank Department, Fort Knox, Ky. Trained to lead the big General Shermans, General Grants, and their little brothers, the light tanks roaring into combat Sergt. Gordon worked with the same tools issued to field crews and under conditions likely to be encountered in the field.

The 20th Armored Division was an armored division of the United States Army that fought in World War II. It was activated on 15 March 1943 at Camp Campbell in Kentucky.
Until October 1944, the 20th Armored Division’s mission was to train soldiers and qualify them for overseas shipment as combat replacements for armored units. To perform this mission, the Division included in its strength an unusually large number of intelligent and highly trained men, including students from several of the Army’s advanced college training program. It was sent overseas in February 1945 and saw continuous action until the wars end in May 1945.
George married Isabel Bisset Nicol on May 28, 1949, in Rye, New York. They had three children during their marriage.
He was a physicist on the research staff of the American Cyanamid Company of Stamford and the family resided in Greenwich, CT.
George Gordon died on June 7, 1995, in Stamford, Connecticut, at the age of 74, and was buried in Fairfield, Connecticut.
