Richard M. Gorman was born in Hingham, MA March 1, 1915, the son of William and Rose (Dunn) Gorman. He was raised and educated in Hingham, Mass. and came to Rye as a young man. Richard was a clarinetist and saxophonist, he was a member of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 38, in Westchester County and a musicians’ union in Bangor, Maine. In Rye his family lived at Blind Brook Lodge.

Richard enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was an Army major and had served in World War II, the Korean War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He remained a member of the Army reserve and retired lieutenant colonel.

He married Marilyn C Rapieff on March 1, 1942, in Stamford, Connecticut. After the war, He and Marilyn, were the owners of the Towne Shop, Men’s Apparel, of Rye, N.Y.

Richard owned and operated The Towne Shoppe, a menswear store on 23 Purchase Street, for more than 30 years until he retired in 1974. His wife, Marilyn, had run The Marilyn Shoppe, a woman’s clothing store, next door to her husband’s business until she retired in 1975.

After their retirement the couple would move to Maine. Marilyn died May 19, 1982.

He was a member of the American Legion Post in Blue Hills, Maine, for several years, and in Rye Post 128 for 35 years.

He was a member of the Bangor Band and played with various society orchestras. In most recent years he played with Westchester Groupe. He was a member of the A.F. of M.
Local 768 and its executive board, of Bangor and a life member of Local 38 of Larchmont, N.Y.

Richard M. Gorman, 68, a retired Rye merchant, died July 19, 1983 at the Ellsworth (Maine) Convalescent Home after a lengthy illness.

At the time of his death, he was survived by two nieces, Grace Pike of Rye and Doris MacMurphy of Pasadena, Calif and several other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; two sisters-in-law, both of Weymouth, Mass.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Hingham, Mass.
